A chalk line is a great visual putting drill that instantly shows the golfer whether they are in control of their start line and ball roll. It also assists the golfer with their setup of both the putter and their body alignments. This drill is used by many PGA Tour professionals and top amateurs to help with their putting.
Check out this chalk line feature on golf.com and this particular video shows PGA player Matt NeSmith at Torrey Pines working with the chalk line during the Farmer Insurance Open.

Chalk lines can be purchased at home improvement or hardware stores. There are assorted colors of chalk available. I use standard blue chalk on the putting green as it disappears quickly, white is also available. Do not use a chalk labeled permanent chalk.
Video Shortcut: 00:15 Find a Straight Putt
One of the keys to using a chalk line is finding a straight roll for your putt. Start by finding a perfectly straight putt on the practice green. This can be done by rolling a number of putts and watching whether the putt breaks left, right, or rolls straight.
Advanced- Use a level to find a flat surface
Once you have found a straight putt, you are ready to set up your chalk line. Next, attach the anchor end of the chalk line behind the center of the hole, using a golf tee. Stretch the chalk line 3-8 feet down the line of your straight putt. Pull the line taught, press against the ground, and snap the line a couple of times to mark a straight line on the green.
After you have put down your chalk line, start putting about two to three feet away from the hole. Make five to ten putts then move another foot back and hole another ten putts. Continue moving farther down the line, putt five to six balls every foot back.
Once you have finished the drill set up in another location and begin again: This time without a chalk line. Go back and forth using the chalk line for a set and then practice the putting drill in a different location on the green without the use of a chalk line. This practice drill is best when performed at least once a week.
Simply practice lining up your line on the golf ball with the chalk line. This will help train you in setting up your line correctly and train your eyes as to what setting up to a properly positioned ball and club face looks like.
Once you feel like your stroke is solid, begin practicing with your mind focused on the target. Tiger Woods calls this "putting to the picture." The goal is to be able to produce putts that roll along your intended line without focusing on technique or stroke mechanics. This will help with your overall feel and touch when putting as well as building trust in your stroke. Then begin practicing your full routine to put it all together.
