Golf is a game that is often played solo, but that doesn't mean you can't improve your skills with the help of feedback. In fact, feedback is one of the most important things you can receive when trying to improve your golf game. But what makes feedback so important? Let's take a look.
There are three main types of feedback that can be helpful to golfers: how the skill felt, the outcome of the skill, and how the skill was performed relative to how it should have been performed. Each type of feedback has its own benefits, but all three together can give you a well-rounded picture of your performance and where you need to improve.
Intrinsic feedback focuses on the sensations that are produced by the movements. For example, a golfer might say, "I felt my weight on my back foot when I finished." This type of feedback can help you understand how your body is moving and identify any areas that need improvement.
This type of feedback looks at where the ball ended up relative to the target. Did you hit it straight? Did it go too far to the left or right? Was it short or long? Understanding the outcome of your shots can help you make adjustments to ensure that future shots are more accurate.
This type of feedback compares how you performed the shot to how it should have been performed. Were there any flaws in your technique? What did you do well? Identifying both your strengths and weaknesses can help you focus on making improvements where they're needed most.
