What Is Total Distance in Golf?

Total distance is the final ground distance from the starting point to where the golf ball comes to rest. It combines carry distance—the flight to first landing—with roll distance—the ground travel after landing.
The simple relationship is:
Total distance = carry distance + roll distance
The calculation is simple. Predicting the roll is not.
Why total distance changes
Carry is influenced by ball speed, launch, spin, air density, wind, and elevation. Roll adds another set of variables:
- Landing angle and speed
- Spin at landing
- Surface firmness and moisture
- Fairway or green slope
- First-bounce direction
- Launch-monitor surface and weather settings
Two shots with the same carry can finish at different total distances. A firm downhill fairway can add substantial run; a soft or uphill landing area may produce very little.
When total distance is useful
Driver planning
Total distance helps estimate where a tee shot may finish and whether rollout could reach a bunker, rough, water, or a narrowing fairway. Always check carry separately when a hazard must be flown.
Club gapping
Total distance can reveal overlap between clubs, but carry is usually the more stable starting point for approach-club decisions. Keep both numbers in a yardage chart when rollout materially affects the shot.
Tracking changes
Compare total distance only when device settings and conditions are comparable. A higher number caused by a firmer modeled surface is not proof that the swing or equipment improved.
Total distance on a launch monitor

Ask three questions before using the number:
- Is the roll measured or modeled?
- Which surface and weather settings are active?
- Does the carry, height, landing angle, and dispersion still fit the intended shot?
A total-distance gain is not automatically useful if the shot carries a hazard less reliably or finishes farther offline.
Build a practical distance chart
For each club, record a representative group of solid shots under consistent settings. Keep:
- Typical carry
- Typical total
- Short and long pattern
- Left-to-right dispersion
- Conditions or normalization used
Use the pattern rather than the single longest shot. On the course, adjust for wind, temperature, elevation, lie, firmness, and slope.
The useful takeaway
Total distance tells you where the ball finishes, but carry tells you what it must clear. Use both. Treat rollout as condition-dependent, and compare launch-monitor totals only under consistent settings.
