Topgolf San Diego and Sorrento Canyon: What Is Confirmed?

Topgolf announced in November 2022 that it was exploring two potential San Diego venues: one in Sorrento Valley and another on East Harbor Island. Those announcements described proposals—not completed approvals or guaranteed opening dates.

As of this update, Sorrento Canyon Golf Center remains an active Golf Upgrades lesson location, and no operating San Diego venue appears on Topgolf’s public location list. Golfers should not rely on old construction or opening estimates.

What Topgolf proposed in 2022

Topgolf’s original announcement said its Sorrento Valley plan focused on redeveloping the Carroll Canyon Golf Center into a three-level venue with more than 80 hitting bays. The same announcement described a separate East Harbor Island concept with more than 100 bays.

Topgolf’s language at the time was careful: both sites were being proposed, and the company described the plans as being in their early stages.

The Sorrento Valley proposal

There is no verified public opening date for a Sorrento Valley Topgolf. Current local reporting has described the proposal as stalled and noted that the existing Sorrento Canyon range continues to operate.

That means earlier claims that construction would begin in 2025—or that the venue would open in 2026—should be removed. The future of the property may change, but an estimate is not a confirmed schedule.

For Golf Upgrades students, the practical answer is straightforward: continue to use the Sorrento lesson options shown in Calendly unless Golf Upgrades or the facility publishes a verified change.

East Harbor Island is a separate project

The Port of San Diego released a Draft Environmental Impact Report for the East Harbor Island redevelopment and proposed Topgolf project on July 10, 2026. The Port said the concept includes a public waterfront park, promenade, entertainment district, supporting infrastructure, and a proposed Topgolf component.

The Port also stated that, as of that announcement, the Board of Port Commissioners had not approved the project, including the proposed Topgolf facility. The Port anticipated bringing the Final EIR and related items to the Board for consideration later in 2026.

Progress on East Harbor Island does not confirm the Sorrento Valley project. They are different sites with different owners, agencies, reviews, and decisions.

What is not confirmed

At this time, readers should not treat any of the following as established facts:

• A Sorrento Valley construction start date
• A San Diego Topgolf opening date
• Final bay counts or building specifications
• Local admission or bay pricing
• The permanent closure date of Sorrento Canyon Golf Center

Prices from Las Vegas or another Topgolf market are not reliable estimates for a future San Diego venue.

What golfers can do now

Golfers can continue practicing and scheduling instruction at Sorrento Canyon while it remains available. Golf Upgrades also offers lessons at Miramar Golf Course, where MCAS Miramar access is required.
