TGL Golf League: What It Means for San Diego's Golf Scene
San Diego, a city with a rich golfing tradition and a vibrant sports community, could soon find itself at the forefront of a revolutionary chapter in golf history—the TGL Golf League. Co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in partnership with the PGA Tour, this cutting-edge league aims to reinvent the sport for the modern age.
The potential arrival of a TGL team in San Diego offers more than just entertainment—it represents a transformative opportunity for the region. From bolstering the local economy to inspiring the next generation of players, the impact could be monumental. Whether you're a lifelong golf enthusiast or just starting to appreciate the game, here's why TGL is a big deal for San Diego—and why the city might just be the perfect fit for its own team.
The TGL Golf League blends traditional golf with high-tech innovations, delivering a primetime-ready format unlike anything we've seen before. Matches take place in state-of-the-art virtual environments, where teams of top PGA Tour professionals compete in a high-energy, fast-paced setting. Think of it as golf meets esports—dynamic, accessible, and designed to capture new audiences.
San Diego's connection to golf is legendary, anchored by iconic venues like Torrey Pines, which hosted unforgettable U.S. Opens and continues to draw golf enthusiasts worldwide. The city has nurtured world-class talent, such as Phil Mickelson, proving that its golfing roots run deep.
The local golf culture is robust, from amateur leagues to junior programs. Adding a TGL team would amplify this community spirit, giving fans a team to rally behind and a reason to celebrate the sport on a whole new level.
Major sporting events are proven economic drivers, and the TGL format—compact, exciting, and ideal for media coverage—has the potential to attract visitors and sponsorships. San Diego, with its stunning weather and tourist appeal, is perfectly positioned to leverage this.
While official team locations have not yet been announced, San Diego ticks all the right boxes:
As the league takes shape, San Diego’s chances of being selected as a host city seem not only possible but probable. ( I hope).
Venue Availability: A suitable venue capable of accommodating TGL's technological and audience needs. San Diego has several potential options like sports arenas or large golf facilities.
Audience Demand: If there's significant interest from the local San Diego community, TGL may consider hosting events in the region.
Logistics and Support: TGL would require local partnerships, operational support, and adequate infrastructure to replicate their setups seen in other cities.
The TGL Golf League represents more than just a reimagined way to play golf—it’s a reimagined way to experience it. For San Diego, the opportunity to host a TGL team or events could invigorate the sport locally, inspiring growth, uniting fans, and positioning the city as a leader in the sport’s evolution.
Whether or not a San Diego TGL team becomes a reality, the possibilities are exciting. From the innovation TGL brings to the table to the passion San Diego has for the game, the connection feels natural—and the future looks brighter than ever. The next event in California is on January 25th, 2025 in Los Angeles (tickets).

Golf has always been more than just a game to me. It’s a reflection of life’s most valuable lessons—lessons I’ve been fortunate to learn from the most influential people in my life, especially my father and grandfathers. My dad, with his unwavering focus and integrity, taught me to always do the right thing, whether on the course or in life. He showed me that true success comes from hard work, discipline, and maintaining a steady moral compass.
But I was also shaped by my grandfathers, both veterans who embodied different, yet equally powerful values. One grandfather instilled in me the importance of family—reminding me that our closest relationships are the foundation for everything meaningful. The other lived life with passion and purpose, teaching me to embrace every moment and live life to the fullest. Together, these influences have shaped not only my approach to golf but how I live and coach today.
As a golf instructor, these lessons are woven into everything I teach. Golf, after all, isn’t just about perfecting your swing or winning tournaments; it’s about patience, perseverance, and growing as an individual. The lessons my mentors passed on to me, I now pass on to my students, hoping to guide them both in their game and in life.
In my experience, the values you learn on the golf course—like focus, respect, and resilience—are the same ones that help you succeed beyond the greens.
